St. James Academy announced today that four of their students have been recognized as part of the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. Every year, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation recognizes the top 50,000 performers nationwide on the PSAT. 1.6 million students took the PSAT last fall, and the top 1% of testers are recognized as National Merit Semifinalists and have the opportunity to continue in the competition to possibly be recognized as a National Merit Finalist and/or Scholar. St. James senior Johnny Childress has achieved this distinction and will continue in the National Merit competition.
The next 34,000 (roughly the rest of the top 3% of testers) are recognized as National Merit Commended Students. Three St. James Academy seniors achieved that distinction: Joe Duggan, Erin Hartegan, and Mitchell Walters.
“This is an incredible achievement, and we could not be prouder to have these students at our school,” said SJA President Andy Tylicki. “They are not only amazing scholars, but they contribute in so many ways to the faith and culture of our school through their many other gifts as well. They exemplify the type of students we strive to form here at St. James.”
Finalists will be announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in February.
