2017 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists and Commended Students

The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Through this nationwide competition National Merit Scholarships are awarded to program Finalists and Special Scholarships are awarded to other high performing participants who meet a corporate sponsor’s eligibility criteria.

We are delighted to announce that St. James Academy senior, Megan Schulte, has been named a Semifinalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship competition.  Students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT) in the fall of their junior year.  The National Merit Scholarship Corporation names 16,000 Semifinalists representing the top 1% of the 1.6 million students who entered the program; National Merit Semifinalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state.

From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the Finalist level and in February they will be notified of this designation.  All National Merit Scholarship winners will be selected from this group of Finalists.  The St. James community wishes Megan the best as she looks towards the next step in the competition.

Another 34,000 high performers have been named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.  Eight additional St. James seniors; Joseph Barragree, Julia Condon, Ryan Geris, Emily Kaufman, Emily Miller, Sarah Rose, Peter Walsh and Vivian Weaver are recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the PSAT.

In addition, seniors Ryan Geris and Vivian Weaver are recognized scholars in the 2017 National Hispanic Recognition Program.  Every year, the NHRP recognizes about 5,000 of the 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT.  The College Board’s NHRP program is an academic honor that can be included on college applications.

We are extremely proud of our students and their achievements.  We also congratulate our teachers and staff for the role they have played in the development of the outstanding academic program here at St. James Academy.  May God continue to bless our community, as it is through Him that we are able to accomplish even greater things!
